Haute Designers

Fashion is what one makes of it. What’s in and what’s out may seem to be an objective viewpoint but it begins with what one thinks would suit the mood of the season. And in this regard, designers are assumed to have a better knack of understanding the need of the hour when it comes to fashion. The hip, the cool, the chic or the trendy — they have it all. Today, fashion is not confined to the industry of models and designers alone. One who knows how to carry himself in style makes an announcement, whatever field he may belong to. And this trend of making fashion statements has become a rage throughout the world today. While the rest of India has given more than one Miss World and Miss Universe to the kingdom of beauty, how can the Northeast stay far behind in etching a niche in the glamour scene?

The Northeast fashion quotient might have its own regional flavour, but it nevertheless endeavours to remain at par with the global repertoire. And in this arena, names like Nandini Baruva, Prashantt Ghosh, and others have made a commendable effort. We take a look at some of the burgeoning new designers who are creating waves in the Northeast.

Nandini Baruva

A wide range of designs in various looks highlights the fashion portfolio of Nandini Baruva’s collection. While you are revelling at the ethnic wardrobe that is embellished with a bunch of junk jewellery, she surprises you further with a whole gamut of new styles that you can try out for different occasions – from the bohemian to the exclusive party wear. Moreover, she has a choice of the right accessories to go with the dresses which complete the right kind of look!

Prashantt Ghosh

A glitz look to the traditional garment – that’s what defines the mega wedding collection of Prashantt Ghosh. Restricting his designs to a palette which revolves around ivory wine, bijou blue, slate grey, cocoa taupe and keeping the fabric in control, Prashantt uses crushed silk as one of the foremost fabrics this year. He has the empire line for tops and dresses, paneling and pleating for skirts and some heavily textured tweed jackets in the latest short-fitted cut.

Payal Chaddha

Using a blend of various colours to merge the Assamese cultural patterns with the native Indian look, Payal Chaddha brings in a trendy combination of the classic folk and the chic modern wear. With special zardozi karigari and aari-work, embellished with occasional Thai motifs in some of her designs, she makes a mark among the upcoming fashion designers of the Northeast.

Daniel Syiem

Coming from the vibrant background of Meghalaya, Daniel Syiem believes that there is a rich culture underlying this unexplored territory that he tries to portray in his designs. Preferring a versatile array of hand-woven fabrics from various parts of the Northeast, Daniel strives to do a lot more with the texture and colour of his designs, blending the native garment with the universal style. Shown here are samples of his spring/summer collection.
