Lights… camera… music… and breathtaking beauties sashaying down the red carpet - enough to set the stage on fire! We are talking about the “inked - jd annual fashion design awards, 2007 ”. The event was held at ITA, Pragjyoti centre, Guwahati. Inaugurated by Her Excellency, the First Lady of Assam, Mrs. Krishna Singh and choreographed by Dipankar Kashyap and Amit Pandey from Kolkata, the inked fashion awards evening was a fusion of glitz and glamour. The show opened with a collection of Dipankar Kashyap, a familiar name in the Northeast fashion scene.

The jd Institute of Fashion Designing came up with an innovative idea this year, with an unusual theme – ‘Ink’, which is almost a part and parcel of the world of fashion, whether it is in the form of a tattoo or in the form of a tie-dye. Giving a subtle touch to this idea of body decoration, the students of jd presented their gala collection for 2007.

FACE MASK

The collection by Neha Khemka uses the concept of masquerading to make an interesting range of garments, accentuating diff erent kinds of masks on them, basically done on black and white.

INDIAN ESSENCE

Khushi Dhanuka tries to draw a new inspiration for her fashion statement through mehendi designs.

NAIL ART

Nailing her creativity into her collection is Swati More, whose fashion sense is inspired by ‘nail art’ that speaks of innovation and style.

FLORA

The Flora collection by Nidhi Jalan, carries the fl ower motif on both men and women’s wear, refl ecting the beauty of nature.

SPARKLE

To render the vivacity of ‘sparkle’ to her collection, Puja Mittal makes it the theme of her line of garments, giving it a retro look.

ABSTRACT PAINTING

While abstract painting falls into creative art, Shreya Garodia uses the same to give her designs an off beat note.

SNAKE

Inspired by the snakeskin texture, the designer trio – Abdul Kalam, Bharati Kr. Singh and Karishma Das uses unconventional colour combinations to make it look sleek and stylish.

GYPSY

Emphasising on the characteristic voluminous skirts of the gypsies, embellished with coins and shell work, Neha Jain brings the Banjara culture of India into the fashion scene.

MERMAID

Designers Kokeela Mazumdar and Kavita Bansal have tried to capture the mesmerising aura in their Mermaid collection, through subtle tones of colours.The lacy umbrellas complete the celestial fantasy.

ZEBRA IN VOGUE

By adding brighter shades to the black and white colour palette of zebra, Minoty Agarwal and Khushboo Mittal have tried to make a variation that stands out in the crowd and yet looks fashionable.

ACCESSORIES

To accessorise one’s wardrobe, from black metal to white diamond, is to make a Megha Sethi choice.

The curtains came down with a display by the collection of the Éclat Boutique.

But the countdown was not over yet. The exciting show was followed by an equally suspenseful awards ceremony. The awards according to the different categories are:

BEST INNOVATION: Swati More for her ‘Nail Art’.

BEST COMMERCIALLY VIABLE: ‘Gypsy’ by Neha Jain

BEST CRITIC AWARD: ‘Indian essence’ by Khushi Dhanuka.

BEST DESIGNER AWARD: Neha Khemka for ‘Face mask’.
The interior design department also had its own share of awards.

BEST INNOVATION: Roshni Goenka and Pooja Goenka.

MOST COMMERCIALLY VIABLE: Swati Agarwal and Arti Mour.

BEST CRITIC AWARD: Sonam Agarwal, Menka Sikaria and Neha Agarwal.

BEST DESIGNER: Asha Jalan, Bidhushi Jalan and Abhilasha Kothari..
International models like Katerina Rzhevska and Alina Rubinska, who have modelled for Triumph, Shopper’s Stop and designer Gauri and Nainika in India, added grace to the show as they showcased the creations of the nouveau designers.

Some other well known faces spotted on the stage were Twinkle Jaggy, the Kingfi sher supermodel 2007, Vipin Makkar who modelled for the DLF ad, Rahul Singh of the Kinetic bike ad, and the fi rst runner-up of the Ford supermodel, Shrestha. Apart from them, many of our home-grown models also made their way on the inked promenade like Anurag Sharma, Nirmaly Basumatary, Stuti Choudhury, Neharika, Sangita Devi, Jaya Brahma, Santa Rajbangshi, Sabasini Laishram, Popi Gohain and the 2007 Gladrags Manhunt fi nalist, Munna Kumar Singh.

Beauty and style should blend together, and when it’s a fashion show that leverages this fact, you can expect the best. Th e jd Fashion Design Awards, have proved that Northeast is on its way to becoming the next prolifi c industry when it comes to fashion.
