NE Heat In The Capital
A flash of hues blending the intrinsic ethnicities of the various Northeastern cultures – can be a subtle attempt to phrase, the collections of fashion designer Dipankar Kashyap. One of the earliest to arrive on the fashion scene of the Northeast, Dipankar has made his mark in the glamorous realm of Indian fashion. He has experimented with different styles in his collections, accentuating on the palette as his primary tool. And he has been designing costumes for Assamese films as well.
Recently, Dipankar wore a new hat, when he organised and choreographed a fashion show for the Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) Vikas Puri Campus Annual Nite 07, in Delhi. Th e show, named Nouvelle Mode, was staged at the Airforce Auditorium, Subroto Park, Delhi Cantonment on August 27, 2007. Th is is, by far, the fi rst institutional fashion show that Dipankar has choreographed, showcasing designs created by the students of INIFD. The designs were divided into eleven themes including Retro, Red wine, Flora and fauna, Formula 1 et al.
RETRO: The retro design carries a fl owerpower style. Wide jeans for men worked with bright fl oral designs and long skirts with fl oral patterns for women reflect the hippie look that was in vogue in the yesteryears.

MINT AND MUSIC: The collection carries a soothing blend of aqua blue and green shades on the chiff on fabric, giving it a reflection of the soul.
FORMULA 1: A range of leather garments, sexy and well-tailored to fi t the body. Fashion tricks on brown and black colours give that extra edge to the gender blending through the Bolero and Bikers jackets that form the ace quotient of Formula 1.
NOMADS: As the name suggests, the collection indulges in changing traditional styles to suit the new age fashion statement. Tie and dye, embroidery, patchwork, sequins, prints and plains – all with a nomadic design that can set the present female couture on an off beat note.
PERSONAL STYLE: Up close and personal. That’s what seems to be, when you see the fashion experiment done in this collection. Towels, which give a soft feel to the skin is teamed with denims to give a never-before look. Soothing pastels for the towel section and striking bright ones for the denim segment of this unconventional combo render an unconventionally dramatic statement.
FLORA AND FAUNA: The collection carries a not-so-common depiction of biodiversity awareness and conservation in the way it brings together deep reds and greens with the subtle tones on velvets, satins and chiffons.

MY WEAVE: Weaving gunny bags is symbolic of the jute fabric. Styling the fabric that has hitherto been used commonly to make gunny bags, to create a new assortment of haute couture gives the collection a novel profi le. Combining it with silk, adds grace to its sedate stance.
CAMEL IN CANADA: This is a range of leather jackets, with the Indian hallmark of leheriyas, bandhanis and tie and dyes styled on black leather. A unique way to don the jacket, the Indian way.
REVAMP: An excellent blend of silhouettes inspired by waste fabrics like dull denims to accompany a beautiful flow of silk brocades make these garments ready for a rock and roll evening.
RED WINE: Silhouettes that are inspired by fl owers with a beautiful mix of cotton and organza fabrics, classify the red wine collection. Hot and sexy, the range defi nes the elite class that it caters to.
ME, THE MYSTERIOUS: Designed in pure cottons, this all-white collection stands out to reflect the aura of spirituality in its very look.
The show was compered by the MTV Roadies and the popular music-show host, Gunjan. A few of the topmost models from the Northeast like Poppy Barman, Esther Jamir, Binita Hazarika, along with other top models of Delhi, supermodel Twinkle and many others made a ravishing appearance on the ramp. “What really inspired me were the designs. Th e clothes were quite dramatic but creative, though not regular wearable attire; and since I am into films these days, it helped me in choreographing the show. I put special effort in the selection of music to bring full justice to these dramatic yet creative garments,” says Dipankar.
